Artist Statement

Painter, 24, living in London.

The core ideas/themes that my practice centre around, are home, landscape, nature, journeys and the atmosphere of cinema.

My aim is to reflect a sense of arrival, rest, peace, and quiet that these themes evoke.

This motivation comes from my home and family, the peace and quiet I’ve felt in a remote landscape, and the feeling of a journey and sense of the epic from films like The Lord of the Rings.

I’m interested in directing my practice towards something that G K Chesterton believes of artists’:

“At the back of our brains, so to speak, there was a forgotten blaze or burst of astonishment at our own existence. The object of the artistic and spiritual life was to dig for this submerged sunrise of wonder.”

David Hockney and Charlie Mackesy have also guided me to this target that Chesterton outlines, as their works both evoke a sense of love, honesty, and appreciation for the natural world.

I use acrylic and oil paint, oil sticks, ink and most recently screenprinting, in my practice.

I paint landscapes from photos and memories in a loose way and use vibrant colours to convey my reaction to these scenes;

My hope is that each viewer will be able to independently stand in front of these scenes and find a space of quiet in their minds, to shut off from the frantic rush of the modern world and feel a sense of home and calm, that I feel landscape and nature bring.
